Solving the problem with harmonics
ABB frequency converters of ultra-low harmonics
- They keep the electricity grid clean;
- They reduce the risk of disturbances;
- Avoid damaging other equipment;
- Avoid interference with communications equipment;
- They reduce the installation surface;
- They reduce the total cost of exploitation

Harmonics generate interruptions, interference and inactivity
Harmonics pollute the electrical grid and cause connected equipment to operate irregularly.
Harmonics can cause damage to sensitive electronic devices, interference in communications equipment, and false readings in measuring devices. Harmonics can trip circuit breakers, blow fuses and cause capacitors to fail. Other effects are the overheating of transformers, cables, motors, generators and capacitors. Equipment must be designed with tolerance to network harmonics and oversizing results in higher investment costs and underutilized capacity.
The problems generated by harmonics result in greater losses due to wasted energy due to overheating and reduced equipment life, subject to unreliable operation. In the worst case, harmonics cause processes to suffer unnecessary and undesirable interruptions.
ABB solution with ultra-low harmonic frequency converters
Prevention is better than cure: ABB ultra-low harmonic frequency converters
Instead of trying to deal with harmonics with often ineffective measures (such as incorporating cooling or oversized equipment), why not use equipment that does not generate harmonics in the first place?
Low content in harmonics
Our ultra-low harmonic frequency converter generates exceptionally low harmonic content and more than meets the requirements set out in the ultra-low harmonic standards. Compared to a traditional converter, the harmonic content is reduced by up to 97%. Harmonic distortion in intensity is typically 3%. With a passive filter, typical total harmonic distortion ranges from 5% to 10%.

Simple and cost-effective installation*
The ultra-low harmonic compact frequency converter has built-in harmonic mitigation. This includes an active power supply unit and an ultra-low harmonic line filter. With our “All-Inclusive” design there is no need for external filters, multi-pole setups or special transformers. Simple installation offers significant savings in space, time and money.
Because the risk of overheating is reduced by reducing harmonic currents, there is no need to oversize equipment, such as transformers and cables.
Output voltage stabilization – safe operation and optimized sizing
The active power supply unit in the inverter can step up the output voltage to ensure full motor voltage even when the supply voltage is lower than the rated voltage. This ensures reliable operation on weak networks.
The voltage boost capability can be used to overcome a voltage drop caused by long power or motor cables. Therefore, there is no need to oversize the motor or supply transformer due to long cables.
The possibility to stabilize the output voltage of a variator of ultra-low harmonics is an advantage compared to passive filter solutions. At nominal loads with a passive filter, there is typically a 5% voltage drop. On the other hand, at partial loads, the voltage across the passive filter can rise up to 10%, creating the possibility of an overvoltage fault.
Efficient use of energy
Ultra-low harmonic converters achieve unity power factor. This high power factor indicates that the electrical energy is used to its full potential.
The inverter offers the possibility to correct the power factor of the network to compensate for the low power factors of the equipment connected to the same network. It reduces the need for additional power factor correction equipment such as filters and large capacitor banks. It can also help avoid penalty charges imposed by electric utilities for poor power factors.
As harmonic currents are reduced, equipment wastes less energy and energy efficiency improves considerably.
For all industries and applications
Our cabinet-mount ACS880-37 ultra-low harmonic frequency converters are customized to meet the precise needs of most industries, such as oil and gas, power generation, pulp and paper, marine, food and beverages, metals and mining.
