What is Matter?
The most connected smart home
Matter is a universal connection protocol that can be used by those compatible devices to work on all types of platforms. The goal is to no longer have to check if it is compatible with the platform we have at home (Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit…), so that it is compatible with all platforms thanks to Matter.
With Matter, everyone in the home can control any Matter-enabled device however they want; phone, TV, smart speaker or app.
Matter is based on IP technology, so it is possible to create a cloud-connected ecosystem for the interoperability of our devices. However, one of its advantages is that it also works locally, so some of our smart devices at home will not need to be connected to the Internet. So if, for example, we want to turn off or turn on the lights from our phone, we can do it without depending on the cloud or additional Hubs.
This protocol works as an additional layer to existing standards such as Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth or Thread. And precisely the latter, based on the Zigbee wireless protocol, is what smart devices must offer compatibility to be able to work with Matter. It is a low-energy wireless protocol, designed to create a connected ecosystem without congesting the home WiFi network.
Each product compatible with Thread has its own router, being able to connect to each other without the need to saturate the traffic of our WiFi network.
